The Art Deco era is famous for being the “Gatsby” or “Roaring Twenties” era. A lot of gorgeous and timeless designs in jewelry came out of this period. During the Art Deco period jewelers often made jewelry upon custom order, this would often take weeks to months to completely craft by hand. Etruscan revival jewelry swept into popularity in the early 1800s with the Victorian era discovery of Etruscan tombs just outside of Rome in Italy. These archaeological digs unearthed beautiful golden jewelry that had been meticulously ornamented with tiny gold beads, featuring flowing geometric shapes, celestial motifs, and a plethora of sacred and Greco-Roman mythological figures. The techniques of repoussé, filigree, and granulation are all attributed to the Etruscans. Jewelers all over the world avidly began to attempt to replicate these ancient techniques, changing the way fine jewelry was made for many years. Granulation is a method of metal surface decoration that consists of tiny metal beads which are applied in a pattern onto a base piece. This meticulous method of application can be done in three ways: hard soldering, fusing, and colloidal soldering. Perfected in Sumer by the ancient Etruscan civilization who resided in present-day Italy, this technique dates back even further to the royal tombs of Ur in Mesopotamia. One way to think of this process is by likening it to a patchwork quilt, whereby every granule is cut from a larger main section of metal material. The beads are made separately by heating those pieces, and then added to the surface after. Granules incorporated in this technique generally work better the higher they are in gold and silver content. The wonderful mystery behind this technique of metal ornamentation resided with the Etruscans, who invented a kind of fine powder granulation that did not use solder. Within the community of metalsmiths, granulation is considered one of the most difficult techniques to employ. 800 silver, also called Coin Silver, is made out of silver coins used in European countries pre-1940. During this time period, it was easier for jewelers and silversmiths to use coins that were already guaranteed at a certain purity, than using another form of silver and having to guess at the purity level. French jeweler Georges Frédéric Strass created paste as an alternative to diamonds during the Georgian era. Leaded glass was cut and polished with a metallic powder until it shimmered brightly like a diamond in the light. These white diamante or strass stones were wildly popular with the glamorous Parisians, and eventually paste stones were colored to mimic other precious gemstones.
