10K White Gold Amethyst Arts & Crafts Art Deco Mens RING Womens Men’s Sz 8.5 Vtg. This 10 karat white gold and amethyst men’s ring incorporates elements of both Arts & Crafts and Art Deco design. The angles (of the ring itself) and geometric lines (below and perpendicular to the stone, for example) show influences of both. As an example, note the sides of the ring, where two rows of radiating lines shoot up and fan out a bit, possibly suggesting the architecture of a sleek Art Deco sky scraper. The rows of lines flank a row of dots and are surmounted by cut out squares, reminiscent of the embellishments seen in the Arts & Crafts furniture and architecture of Greene and Greene. The combination is interesting and handsome. The faceted amethyst stone is set open backed and is a pale shade Rose of France? That is most harmonious with the white gold mount. The oval stone is bezel-set in the octagonal face, at the corners of which, deeply incised lines create little rectangles. Below (and perpendicular to) the face, at the four sides, triangular lines likewise create a zig-zag pattern and on the sides, are the cut outs, dots and “skyscrapers, ” all contributing to the Art Deco and Arts & Crafts look of the ring, while adding contrast, movement, texture, depth and interest. The face of the ring measures slightly over 1/2″ top to bottom by about 7/16″ wide. The ring is a size 8.5 and weighs 3.9 grams. It is signed on the inside of the shank “10K”. The former owner loved wearing this ring, as will you, and there are considerable scratches on the gold and the stone. There is dirt, mostly under the face in all those angular corners (but there was also a scrap of paper, that has since been removed, stuck near the face, as can be seen in the photo of the ring on my hand). It is slightly out of round and there are also several flaws in execution one notes only upon closer inspection, including the presence of three small cut outs on one end that do not have counterparts elsewhere, differing depths of the dots between the “skyscrapers” and other inconsistencies in the incised lines that for most, only add to its hand made charm. Upon close inspection, I note a small crack in the gold in a corner near where one of the (would-be matching) cut outs was not completed, which may have happened when the cut out was attempted (and explain its being unfinished and the matching ones not being made). In any case, it is completely stable, not going anywhere and very hard to notice. So the ring, after most or all of a century (during which time, it may have been professionally resized, based on a line on the back of the shank noted in the photo of the back) is in just Good vintage condition. Enumerating all the small issues makes it sound worse than it is and much worse than it looks, as they are all hard to notice without close examination. If you are a perfectionist collector, you will not be happy with this piece but if you want an Art Deco/Arts & Crafts ring with a lot of design to wear, without paying the price a perfect one would command, this one will provide a lot of “flash for the cash, ” no one will ever notice the small imperfections when you wear it, and it might just be the bargain you seek. Despite any flaws, this vintage white gold ring is interesting and good looking and may well be one you will wear all the time. It looks good on a woman as well as a man and will come to you in a gift box as it would make a great gift.
