Vintage 14k Wt Gold Art Deco Mens Color Change Lab Aquamarine Ring. Vintage 14k Wt Gold Art Deco Vari Gem Mens Color Change Aquamarine Spinel Ring. Offered today is a very unique antique 1930s men’s ring in solid heavy 14k white gold, by vintage jewelry company “Vari-Gem” (which was around in the early part of the 20th century). This ring is unique on two levels–first, the patented design (which I will explain), and secondly, the mesmerizing color of the gemstone, which changes from a turquoise green-blue, to more of a deeper blue, depending on the light. I took this ring to our reputable GIA Gemologist appraiser (with brick and mortar jewelry appraisal stand alone office) for evaluation. She has confirmed that this stone is synthetic spinel in an unusual color, for a color change stone. If you like DIFFERENT, this might just be for you! It took me a few minutes to figure out why this ring had a patent pending. If you look underneath the mounting’s head, you will see two TEENY TINY screws, which apparently help to secure the stone. Possibly this design was originally formulated so maybe you could change out the stone easily? The 10 x 8 mm emerald cut aquamarine-colored spinel (approx 2.50 ct) is a Maui sea green/blue color in natural light, very true to the color in these photos. When you bring it inside, it looks more of a steely blue. It is flanked on each side by a round white sapphire set in 3 prongs, within a triangle. The mounting is strong and heavy–if you are looking for a men’s ring that isn’t “cookie cutter” this might be the one for you! It is hallmarked VARI GEM 14k and Pat Pend. The hallmarks are crisp and clear, evidencing its very good condition. The face measures 9/16″ top to bottom and tapers gradually to 3/16″ at the inside of the finger. It weighs a heavy 9.3 grams, and it’s a size 9.75. This vintage Art Deco men’s lab aquamarine ring is in very good condition for its age!
