This listing is for a LARGE vintage man’s ten (10) karat yellow gold’s ring, previously owned, in good condition. It features an engraved intaglio, depicting a human head in profile it looks like a helmeted? Roman or Greek soldier. The stone is a semi-translucent dark brownish orange natural SARD, a variety of Chalcedony. It appears dark brown (almost black) and opaque when worn on a finger. The orange color shown in the pictures can only be seen when there is a light shining behind the stone. The stone is squarish (18x18mm) with rounded corners (cushion shape) and a flat polished bottom. 3.7mm (at the shallowest part of the intaglio) to a little over 5mm (at the corners of the stone). It is set with four (4) elongated prongs (see pictures); this type of setting could also be called a partial bezel setting. The head/helmet have a dull finish (almost like a satin finish on metals) that contrasts nicely with the high luster of the rest of the stone. There is a small chip in the top left corner of the intaglio (see pictures) ; thankfully, it’s fairly shallow and could probably be polished by a good lapidary or gem cutter. The squarish top of the ring measures 23.5x22mm (15/16″ X 14/16″). The bright polished mounting is scored on the four sides and halfway down the shank which tapers down to 3/16(4.8mm), measured at the very bottom of the shank. The ring size is 10. The intaglio is the most popular descendant of the ancient seals that first appeared in Mesopotamia before 3000 BC. An intaglio is an engraved gem that has a design cut shallowly into it’s surface. It is usually made from opaque gems like chalcedony and hematite. The engraved design lies below the stone’s outer edge. The most common subjects are human heads in profile..
